Clothing is a very important part of making this trip an enjoyable experience. The weather in Indiana is usually fairly moderate during the summer, between fifty and seventy degrees. Of course this does not mean that temperatures will not fall well below fifty degrees. We will hope for the best, but in our 12 week stay we are bound to encounter not so nice weather.
Be prepared for Rain. Bring good rain gear NO PONCHOS, multi ply Gore Tex products are the best, but there are a number of good waterproof membranes on the market now. Breathable rain gear is the way to go and remember when it rains and it will rain, were still working, so if you are sweating as hard as it is raining and you are wearing rubber rain gear, you're going to be wet anyway. Make sure that your rain jacket has a hood. Articulating hoods make working easier when it is raining.
Think layering. Warm clothing synthetic materials are best, they dry quickly and stay clean longer, cotton clothing is our last choice. Thermals as a base layer are highly recommended, again synthetic thermal underwear is the best choice. For thermals we highly recommend Patagonia mid weight. Sweaters and/ or fleece jackets are great for keeping warm. Synthetic fleece jackets are our first choice followed by wool sweaters. A pair of fleece pants may not be a bad idea as you can always use them to sleep in at night. A warm hat of some sort, maybe one with something to cover the ears would be a good idea. Two pairs of gloves, one fingerless and one very warm pair are a must. Work gloves and an insulated pair may not be a bad idea either. Bring multiple pairs of work clothing. Carhart type overalls, or heavy duty pants, and many pairs. Lots of clothing, remember when it gets dirty and you can't wear it anymore you have to wash it in the river, and drying out wet clothing can take a while, especially if the weather does not cooperate. Many pairs of socks, I can not stress this enough extra socks, extra socks, extra socks. Bring foot powder as well, it will keep your feet dry at night and keep your socks smelling fresher longer. Wool, synthetic or COTTON! The only cotton product I would have on this trip would be cotton duck work pants and a jacket, you know the heavy duck canvas type.
Boots:
A good pair of chain saw boots would be a good idea, but any steel toe boot will work well. Bring a pair of light hikers along to wear around the camp. All leather boots that you bring should be treated with a water repellent, like snow seal, or Techtron.
Personal items,
Toilet paper- we are going to be here 12 weeks. Bring chap stick, sun screen, and sun glasses. Soap- Environmentally friendly soap only, we recommend Dr. Bronners soap.
Wash clothes and Towels, the synthetic pack towels you find at REI work great and dry very fast. Skin lotion is also a good idea as the wind may dry your skin after a while. Mosquito repellent and a mosquito net is advised. A filet knife, and a leatherman tool will come in handy. You will need your own plates, knives, spoons, forks and insulted cups. A thermos for bringing hot coffee up to the building site in the morning might be a good idea. You will be doing your own dishes so bring scrub pads or the like to clean your plates.
Sleeping
Bring warm sleeping bags. I highly recommend synthetic sleeping bags in the zero to fifteen degree range. The only down bags I would bring are Gore Dryloft bags and these bags are very expensive. Inflatable sleeping mats work best, but the foam ones will do unless your tent is large enough for a cot. A cot would be the best way to go with a sleeping mat on top.
Misc.
Bring a camera to capture the wild life and class daily. Bring flash lights, and batteries. . We will have a group medical kit, but any medications you may need as well as a small personal medical kit should be included in your bags.
This will have additional entries as the start date approaches!
What to bring to this Indiana Log Building Workshop?
12 week Log Builder Hands-on Log Building Workshop
Full-scribe-to-fit Log & Post & Beam Home Building
This Program will provide the students with the requisite skills and needed knowledge required to work as a handcrafter of log homes and / or establish their own custom building business. The log building industry in Canada is attempting to devlope a 4 year apprenticeship to the trade of log builder, - this course will provide the appropriate training leading to a log builder carreer or small business start-up.
Students will develop the skills required by constructing a complete log building. The students will learn to lay our the bottom course of logs, how to select the next log and scribe and fit as the building progresses. As the students' skill level with the various hand and power tools, such as scribers and chainsaw improves, they will move on to delveloping more refined techniques in cutting out window and door openings, log and trim cuts, electrical outlets, and building the timber truss and purlin roof system.
Classroom time interspersed troughout the program will be used to examine design requirements for log structures, blue print reading, Interntional Log Building Association recommendations, and Log Building Standards. Students will also be introduced to some of the more recent developments in log building construction methods, including concerns with over-scribe and double-scribe long grove, log selection techniques, and then use of post and beam construction in conjuction with horizontal round logs.
Students will learn all the elements required to build with logs and heavy timber, and will be able to apply what they have learned in constructing a complete building. This program will emphasize quality workmanship exceeding ILBA standands, and the development of skills to allow the student to enter the work force as a log and post and beam home-builder.
The program will be conducted over 12 weeks. 80% work place setting 20% class room setting.
Mastery of saw handling will be central to the quality of your experience - start working with your saw today, talk with your dealer - bring it "broke-in" and ready to go!
