Lasko School of Log Building
2010 Hands-on Student Project & Plans

Over the years, we have strived to learn and improve our training and this year, we're giving details on what planned projects will be!

So that students can better prepare, being able to study the plans helps anticipate what will be included in your hands-on learning experience!

At the conclusion of the Spring 2010 12 week program - we will draw a student's name from a hat and the winner will take posession of this handcrafted full-scribe-to-fit log cabin depicted in the plans!
(A $25,000.00 to 32,000.00 value!)    More ....

"Making Traditional Log Building Craftsmanship The Focus of Your Future"

The purpose of the twelve week Log Builder Training Program is to prepare you to enter the craft of building with logs.
In that amount of time, students learn the Scandinavian Saddle-knotched full-scribe-to-fit and Hewn-log Appalachian dovetail
style log construction enabling them to be able to do this both in "chinked" and "chinkless" methods. They will know how to build
Post & Beam with 'round-log" joinery, such as porches and even pavilion type structures. The students will learn how to design
and build heavy log and timber truss roof support systems. Our approach is simple and we remind students that much of what
we will be teaching has a 1500 year old tradition - a rich tradition with many buildings still in use in old Europe from the 8th and
9th centuries!

Instruction begins with establishing a practice area and introduction of a step by step approach to layout and cutting
of various notches and other joinery / cutting operations with the tools of the log builder. This approach takes the anxiety away and
allows people of all backgrounds and skill sets to achieve at a pace of their own and leaves no one behind. Safety, saw maintenance
and the skills with the chainsaw, our primary power tool used, are also a part in getting started. From the practice area we move on to
working on construction of a real log cabin project. Over the years, this has involved a variety of projects being built at various stages
of completion and gives that "whole" experience to those seeking a well rounded instruction in log construction. Training is geared for
the individual to work alone but emphasis is placed on "train the trainer" - meaning, you will be able to show help how you want things
to be done. The skills, confidence and ability to work alone enable you to begin a business and grow it and not have the 'tail wagging
the dog'  so-to-speak. How long it takes to complete a log shell depends on many things, such as log size, project size and your time
available. Students will see how to efficiently manage a log building yard and project and know the wisdom in pre-assembly first-hand.

This coming year, we will continue to do some of the same but are shifting to a new format. Meaning, we are going to look to build two
log cabin shells (16 x 24) using the same blueprints from start to finish in two different styles - simultaneously. This assures a "from the ground up"
experience while perfecting your layout and construction skills in a variety of log styles. From selecting sill logs to cutting door and window
openings straight and true, engineering allowances for settling, pre-drilling for wiring, installation of log floor joist support systems, layout
and cutting of log stairs systems as well as the roof truss and purlin systems. Upon completion, you should understand the entire layout techniques
and be able to read and build by blueprints with confidence.

Also, this year, if we have a minimum of eight 12 week students participate in a 12 week program, names of the the students are placed in a hat and
a drawing is had where one of the two log cabins will belong to that student. We teach, we lead, we motivate and we instill confidence and like any other
business, we look to find ways to improve and enhance your training experience. We feel, under the right circumstances, that incorporating this kind of
an incentive to participate will further encourage those who have been wanting, for many years, to learn these skills thoroughly and decide this is their time
to do so! If we have less than eight students enroll, we will follow the format and complete the two cabin shells as far as that group is able. This accommodates
smaller enrollments and overall assures both the quality of the students training experience and makes it possible to do so even with two or three. The math
works out if we can have eight students and we limit class size to 10. With the "Companion" aspect of enrollment, the primary enrollee is counted as one.
Sharing over all expenses with a companion has it's own incentives such as someone to work with that has or shares the same goals and plans to build with logs.
The value of the log cabin shell is estimated to be around $25,000.00 to $32,000.00. If a student wins the drawing but is not with means to take possession, he
can sell it and have that worked out by the time of the drawing at the conclusion of the 12 weeks. If he is unable to sell it, the school will "buy it back" by
reimbursing the cost of tuition paid. One chance in 8 to 10 to not only learn the craft of building with logs but go home with and have a cabin to live in, place on
a property finish and then sell (which is where the real value is!) or even use as a model in getting set up as a custom log builder.

If there ever was a time that was right - it's now. Please reply with your contact information so that we can send you our 2010 schedule packet and brochure and we'll get that in the mail to you asap!

NOTE:  2010 is our 20th anniversary and to celebrate 20 years of teaching and training hundreds of students over the years from all over North America and Europe,
all 12 week students registered for February 2010 by December 5th, 2009, will receive a new 346 Husquvarna chainsaw!
